Bangkok: Gateway to Thailand

Whether it’s your first trip to Bangkok or a familiar return, the skyline has a way of stopping you in your tracks. Golden spires gleam against neon towers, and the city’s pulse beats from riverbanks to rooftop bars. Bangkok isn’t just a destination—it’s an experience that unfolds differently every time you visit.

Things to Do
According to my dad, once you’ve seen one temple in Thailand, you’ve seen them all. But I disagree! Each has its own dazzling display of shiny golden grandeur, intricate carvings and grandiose hallways. And if you like the feeling of other world opulence, and can tune out the troves of sweaty tourists, then let’s be friends.

Thai temples, or wats, are more than architectural marvels—they are living symbols of Buddhism’s central role in daily life. Gilded spires and serene Buddha statues reflect the Thai values of devotion, balance, and beauty.

For tourists, visiting these temples is both a cultural and spiritual encounter, offering a glimpse into the heart of Thailand’s traditions. They represent not just sacred spaces, but the harmony that defines Thai culture.
1. Wat Pho
The temple of “the reclining buddha” is highly popular, and for good reason. Prepare yourself to be humbled as you stand at the belly of this larger than life Buddha.

The temple is one of the oldest in Bangkok, and the statue–well it’s amongst the largest buddha statues in Thailand. I’m going to need that list of very large buddha locations, because…wow. The temple also features a traditional Thai medicine school, teaching Thai massage, medicine and midwifery.

Expect to wear a scarf to cover your shoulders, and even long pants are recommended. If you aren’t dressed appropriate, you will be asked to wear a collard shirt for a small fee (pictured below).

2. Bangkok Canal Tour
To experience a side of Bangkok that most travelers don’t get to see, head to the docks for a traditional Longtail boat ride along the canals of the Chao Phraya River. Experience the floating markets, stilt homes and all the views of Bangkok skyscrapers in the distance.

Tickets are just under $40 USD and the tour is 2 hours. Hands down one of my favorite experiences in Bangkok! The backwaters of Bangkok are really something, offering a special glimpse into the authentic pulse of Thai culture. You will see wooden homes on stilts, floating options from a sea of vendors rowing by, and daily rituals of the temples and trade.

3. Khao San Road
Admittedly, I did the backpacker’s greatest hits and stayed a couple nights near Khao San Road. The energy of the place is famously flooded with young, tourist party vibes, however you can still expect to find excellent street food, shopping and skilled Thai massages. During the day, vendors take over the streets and by night, the same streets become a dance floor for Aussies, Irish, American and English tourists on break from University.

4. Luxury Shopping Malls
Bangkok’s luxury shopping malls are destinations in themselves—polished, sprawling spaces that feel more like high end playgrounds.

Malls like IconSiam, Siam Paragon, and Central Embassy combine high-end fashion with gourmet dining, art installations, aquariums, and even rooftop gardens.

For travelers, these malls offer not only world-class shopping but also a glimpse into Bangkok’s cosmopolitan lifestyle. And don’t worry if you’re thinking, can I afford anything? Girl, they have Zara, so we are okay!

Experience Nightlife in Bangkok
1. Sing Sing Theater
Get prepared to have one of the best nights on the town–of your life! Sing Sing is a retro-futuristic night club featuring DJ’s, dancers and a dinner club. Check the events calendar to see the latest happenings, or book a night club tour that includes Sing Sing Theater. I went on my own, paid a $20 cover and drank a couple beers for $10 a piece. After seeing the reviews on this place, I have mixed feelings recommending it, but if you’re looking for aesthetically, visually stunning places to enjoy beers, or a cocktail for a couple of hours, this is it.

2. Lebua Skybar
Located on the 63rd floor of the State Tower, nothing beats the romanesque terrace views of Bangkok here. Expect to pay upwards $50 per cocktail, which is way more than anywhere else I went in the city.
It is worth noting however, Skybar does not charge an entrance fee. For a memorable night, with endless city views that feel like you are on top of the world, it’s one drink worth it.

3. Doma Bar
For a smaller, ambient atmosphere with warmth and character, visit Doma Bar near the Mandarin Oriental. Offering unique signature drinks, fancy and funky decor, and friendly servers-it’s the perfect spot for a cozy night out.

5. Bangkok Food Tours
Food tours are the fastest and most delicious way to unlock the heart and soul of Bangkok. Not only will you learn all about Thai cuisine, you will taste the various regions and interpretations of the most well known dishes.

6. Night Markets
When the sun sets, Bangkok’s night markets come alive in a swirl of neon lights, sizzling woks, and endless stalls. Expect everything from smoky skewers and fragrant curries to handmade crafts and knock off fashion finds. The atmosphere is vibrant-half street food festival, half treasure hunt. For travelers, it’s the perfect way to get to know Thai culture.
Bangkok Calling…

Whether you wander Bangkok’s gold shimmering temples, sip cocktails above the skyline, or weave through night markets, Bangkok rewards the curious traveler. It’s a city that dazzles, challenges, and ultimately charms—leaving you both humbled and hungry for more.
