Nestled along the scenic coastline of South Carolina, Charleston renders Southern charm and enduring history. Cobblestone streets, picturesque parks, and antebellum architecture make this Southern city a must-visit travel destination.
Just across the waters bay, Mt. Pleasant opens up to the Atlantic Ocean with sea-side boardwalks, beaches and restaurants. Whether you have an afternoon or a few days, here are the best historical highlights from my stay in Charleston and it’s neighbor across the bay.
Charleston is easily walkable with great access to waterfront parks, historic squares and gardens. At every turn, is a plaque etched into a building honoring its place in history. Put on your best walking shoes and take in the sights of an enduring piece of American History.
Historic Charleston Architecture & Parks
1. Rainbow Row
Pastel-hued historic homes, cobblestone streets, and a waterfront views. Stroll along Rainbow Row and immerse yourself in the vibrant charm of these preserved iconic residences.
2. The Battery and White Point Garden
Experience the Antebellum mansions, historic cannons, and lush greenery. The Battery and White Point Garden offer a delightful blend of Southern charm and historic ambiance, providing a tranquil escape in the heart of the city.
3. Mt Plesant: Ocean Walk at Pitt Street Bridge Park
Gorgeous walking path with 360 views of the bay of Charleston. During my stay in Mount Pleasant, I rode a beach cruiser bike through one of the best neighborhoods, with incredible views, parks, cemeteries and restaurants.
Historic Cemeteries and Museums
The city oozes history, both of the brutality of the slave trade and the American Civil War.?While the colonial-era architecture has been preserved by the city, many historians remark that the stories of the enslaved laborers have been erased or forgotten. Fortunately, several museums are dedicated to preserving the history of the West Africans, and keeping alive their stories and traditions.
1. Circular Congregational Church Graveyard
Intricate gravestones, centuries-old oak trees, and the final resting place of prominent historical figures, the grounds here are remarkable and serene. The location is beautiful, winding through the elegant surroundings of Circular Congregational Church Graveyard.
2. Magnolia Cemetery
Gothic Revival architecture, hauntingly beautiful sculptures, and graves dating back to the 19th century. Magnolia Cemetery offers a peaceful and reflective atmosphere.
3. Old Slave Mart Museum
The Old Slave Mart Museum tells the story of Charleston’s role in the slave trade from 1856 to 1863. During this time Charleston became one of the major hubs for enslaved collecting and selling. In the time between the drafting of the U.S. Constitution and the Civil War, more than one million American born slaves were sent to work on the cotton and sugar plantations in the lower South. For an insight into one of the most important historical US Cities, this museum tour is eye opening and revealing.
Churches & Sacred Spaces
Charleston is renowned for its beautiful architecture, and perhaps the most impressive and culturally important examples are the city’s churches and cathedrals.?Many of the grounds have beautiful courtyards, gardens and aged cemeteries, making them a place of solace and remembrance for any religious or non religious person.
1. St. Michael’s Episcopal Church
Georgian architecture, Tiffany stained glass windows, and a church bell from 1764, St. Michael’s Episcopal Church glows with its timeless beauty and spiritual significance.
2. Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist
Grand ceilings, intricate artwork, and awe-inspiring stained glass lines the edges of The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist.
3. Circular Congregational Church
This Church boasts a unique architectural design that adds to Charleston’s diverse ecclesiastical landscape. The circular sanctuary design, beautiful woodwork, and historic cemetery add the the many congregations that mark Charleston as “The Holy City.”
Historic Streets & Antiques
1. King Street
King Street offers a perfect blend of modern elegance and historical charm, making it a premier destination for shopping and exploring. Here you will find boutique shops, historic buildings and remarkable southern fashion.
2. Broad Street
Broad Street is famous with historical landmarks, art galleries, restaurants and well-preserved architecture and antique shops.
3. Meeting Street
As the name suggests, Meeting Street is where the past meets the present. Many historical plaques and signs line the streets and buildings with an insightful glance into the city’s past.
Charleston is a treasure trove of history and Southern charm. From its historic graveyards to cobblestone streets, picturesque parks, every corner of this city tells a segment of American History. Explore the past, enjoy the present, and immerse yourself in the timeless allure of Charleston.
The best time to visit is early Spring when the weather is just warming up! The hidden gardens and courtyards are budding with new growth and the streets will be less crowded. All the usual tourist spots are less busy, allowing for you to move with ease.
