Mexico’s Little Hidden Gem

So, you’ve been to Mexico a few times and you’re craving something a little more off the beaten path?
This tiny island sits about three hours north of Cancún, and getting there takes a little commitment: a shuttle transfer, a ferry ride, and then a 4×4 across the sand.
But that extra effort is exactly what keeps it special.
Holbox is not the kind of place you stumble into by accident. It asks you to slow down before you even arrive. And because it takes a bit more planning to get there, it still feels refreshingly removed from the more polished, crowded corners of the Mexican Caribbean.
It is quiet, sandy, colorful, and a little wild around the edges — in the best possible way.

Tucked along Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, Isla Holbox is the kind of place that still feels remote and untouched by mass tourism.
With sandy streets, no cars, endless white beaches, and warm turquoise water, Holbox has that slower, softer feeling people are always searching for — the version of Mexico that feels easy, colorful, and a little less discovered.
Whether you’re traveling solo, with a friend, or with someone special, Holbox offers the perfect blend of rest, beauty, island charm, and barefoot adventure.

On island you’ll find a range of accommodations from eco-lodgings, tree house Airbnb’s and waterfront bungalows. The town is quickly growing with boutique shops, restaurants and beautiful shoreline properties, but with all that new development I recommend looking at reviews ahead of time. This is especially true on the water front properties, where construction may be taking place next door.

The island does not have cars, which further preserves the natural beauty and charm. The 4×4 taxi’s add an element of off roading adventure, as the island’s terrain can be rough in some areas, with muddy roads weaving to the outskirts of the island.
The going rate on a 4×4 taxi is about $5-12 per ride, depending on distance. Renting a golf cart is an option, but expect to pay over $200 per day. Town is easily walkable but if you stay on either side of town, expect to take taxi’s daily.

How to get there
Arrive from Cancún International Airport, and be sure to arrange transport ahead of time to Chiquilá, the gateway port to Isla Holbox. Private transfers take about 2 hours, and range $60–120 USD per person, while shared shuttle services cost roughly $40–75 USD per person, and can take up to 4 hours. Taxi’s, forget about it, unless $400 sounds good to you.
Once at Chiquilá, there are two ferry’s, departing every 30 minutes from around 6AM to 9:30PM. The ferry ride is a nice, scenic 20–30 minute crossing to Holbox. When you arrive on the island, head straight to the line of 4×4 taxi’s.
Holbox is walkable, but do be warned–the streets do flood! This can be unappealing to many travelers, but as long as you are willing to go with the flow, you can easily find other streets that are less flooded to walk. Holbox simply doesn’t have a good drainage system, and when it rains, the water sticks around.

Where to Stay in Isla Holbox
1. AWA Boutique Hotel
Awa is a newer hotel with minimalist boho vibes and a trendy beach club. Airy rooms, private pools and private rooftops– it’s worth the splurge! Depending on the season, rates can be as low as $140/night and upwards $300/night. For best rates, I have always found Expedia to be the best guide. The beach restaurant has an incredible, authentic menu and for my food recommendations on Holbox, check out the guide, Where to Eat on Isla Holbox.

2. Punta Caliza
Isla Hobolx has many unique hidden gems, and this one is certainly up there on the list. With a thatched-roof, whitewashed look, Punta Caliza is one of those places that you will remember. Punta Caliza is a highly awarded hotel, but don’t expect anything grandiose, just natural beauty, simplicity and very friendly staff. Oh, and the breakfast was some of the best we had on the island! 3. Casa Acacia
Casa Acacia is a beautiful 2 bedroom condo with beachfront views. The build is brand new and offers amazing amenities from a full size kitchen, two levels, balcony and gorgeous interiors. This place is perfect for families or those traveling with friends.

What to Do in Isla Holbox
1. Punta Mosquito
Punta Mosquito is a long-white sandbar at the island’s northern edge, featuring flamingos and an abundance of unique sea shells! But quick note on that, the airport security will take your shells, if you put them in your carry on. My understanding is, you can take them, but checked bags only. Getting to Punta Mosquito, you can take a taxi to the furthest point north. Then expect a 30-45 minute walk through the shallow, sometimes deep waters. Depending on the tide, some areas will be deeper to cross, so make sure you have a waterproof bag or can carry your items above your head. Arrive at sunrise or sunset for ethereal light and flamingo sightings, depending on the season.

2. Explore Holbox’s Art Streets
Downtown Holbox is a living canvas with vivid murals of marine life, Mayan heritage and beautiful portraits. The vibrancy of the street art ads a whimsical ambience to the town, with bright murals and storytelling.

Begin by walking through Calle Tiburon Ballena and weave your way through and around town, the art is everywhere!

3. Get Inked at a Local Tattoo Shop
The island has many artists who come from other areas of the region for seasonal work. Tattoo tourism is a thing, and these shops stay booked. Luckily my man was able to get an appointment and satisfy his ink craving. Prices are fair, just be sure to schedule a few days ahead.

4. Boutique Shopping
I found high quality textiles, jewelry, artisan soaps, hand-embroidered dresses, crocheted bikinis and woven handbags. There are several shops within town proper, and many more just outside of the main market square. I purchased copal resin, a white-knit dress, a colorful woven- leather dog collar, artisan soaps and several beaded bracelets–all good quality at a fair price. Many boutiques closer to the hotels are higher end, with dresses starting at $175, but if you meander deeper into the town square you will find similar items at a fraction of the cost. I actually found a dress that I chose for my wedding at a shop in town for $23.

5. Do a Tequila Tasting
Enjoy a true Tequila experience, guided by a woman originally from the town of Tequila. Everything you ever wanted to know about tequila, you will learn-and taste! Tequila-O’Clock has the largest collection of tequila in Holbox and the tasting consists of 5 top rated tequilas and a house margarita. We walked in and did the VIP tour, which was about $70 per person.

5. Punta Coco Beach
Punta Coco is a tranquil beach at Holbox’s western tip. The area itself is less crowded and the sandbar extends into the ocean. I found this area to be the perfect walkabout for collecting shells, wading in warm shallows, and watching pelicans dive for fish. There are several low-key beach bars with umbrellas and chairs, or you can find your own slice of sand and pitch your towel and umbrella.

6. Get Married
My partner and I knew we wanted to do something just us, and luckily our elopement came together just 3 days before we arrived on the island. I found a local coordinator @bettyislaholbox who responded promptly to my inquiry about a very low key sunset ceremony. We were incredibly thrilled with the location, the photographers and the officiant, who really made us feel comfortable and excited about our decision to elope. The price was unbeatable, and everything was zero stress. If you are looking to elope, definitely consider Isla Holbox for your destination wedding.

7. Experience Carnival
Luckily the event of the season occurred during the tail end of our stay, and we were able to catch the first night of the celebrated, Carnival! The main square is filled with excitement, dancing, music, locals and tourists. Carnival is held from late February to early March and draws a much smaller crowd compared to other cities in the Yucatan. The dancers prepare all year, sewing costumes and creating dance routines that fill every block of the main square. It really is an exciting event to see, and the whole town comes together to participate.

8. Guided Bioluminescence Kayaking Tour
Head out after sunset for a guided tour of the bioluminescence waters and starry night sky. Holbox has a special place on the island where the algae and plankton create a natural phenomenon of glowing light.
Pack your bags…
Just far enough off the beaten path, this little island welcomes travelers with a unique perspective. With hidden beaches, artisan shops, gorgeous accommodations and restaurants, I promise you will be dreaming of Holbox for years to come. Whether you want to lounge on the beach, explore wildlife, dance at carnival, this island has it all. The car-free streets, friendly locals, and simplify make it a top travel destination for those seeking a peaceful escape.
