Here is my roundup of the eight best places to visit on your next trip in North Georgia!
1. Lake Burton, GA
Nestled in the scenic mountains of northern Georgia, Lake Burton is a stunning reservoir with a history dating back to the early 20th century. Created by the damming of the Tallulah River, Lake Burton is a popular destination for boating, fishing, and lakeside relaxation.
The area provides access to the Appalachian Trail, including Arkaquah, Tray Mountain, and Dick’s Creek Gap trail. For a quick trail with a waterfall reward, try Hemlock Falls trailhead.
2. Tallulah Gorge State Park, GA
Tallulah Gorge is a natural masterpiece. With awe-inspiring views, waterfalls and viewpoints, it is a must see! Tallulah Gorge State Park has several trails with breathtaking overlooks of the Gorge and a very nice visitors center.
Don’t miss the chance to hike the suspension bridge, just be prepared to get your workout in! The stairs down to the bridge are steep, and what goes down, must go up! The Hurricane Falls Trail is a personal favorite, leading you to the heart of the gorge with a close-up view of the cascading waters.
While you are in Tallulah Falls make sure to visit the best victorian tea house and cafe called Tallulah 1882. Serving speciality drinks like Cardamon Rose Cacao and Tumeric Iced Lemon Tea, this special ambiance inside is a cozy haven from a cool fall day. From there head into the little charming town of Lakemont and enjoy the sandwiches from The Open Door At Alley’s Ol’ Store.
3. Toccoa Falls, GA
Toccoa Falls, Georgia is a small town with an impressive college campus that happens to be the location of the falls.
As the tallest waterfall in Georgia, it is visited by many. It costs $5 to enter and is just a short walking distance from the parking lot. For breathtaking views, without the long hike, it makes a breathtaking point of interest.
4. Hiwassee, GA
Hiawassee is a charming town surrounded by the beauty of the Appalachian Mountains. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore Bell Mountain Park’s hiking trails, revealing stunning views of Lake Chatuge and lush landscapes.
Hiawassee also comes alive with the sweet sounds of nature and music during outdoor concerts at the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds. While you’re in Hiwassee be sure to visit Brasstown Bald, the highest point in Georgia at 4, 784 ft.
5. Chattooga Belle Farms, SC
Chattooga Belle Farms in South Carolina offers a picturesque escape with apple orchards and vineyards near the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Longcreek is just on the other side of the GA border line, and worth a visit if you are in Clayton GA. Guided tours take you through the river’s rapids, surrounded by lush forests and the pristine wilderness of the Chattahoochee National Forest.
There are many beautiful hiking trails in Long Creek that wind along the river with sandy banks and trickling waterfalls.

7. Clayton, GA
For a town that didn’t get much press 5 years ago, Clayton has grown to be a popular weekend destination for Atlanta residents. Established in 1821, Clayton was originally known as The Dividings due to its location at the intersection of several Cherokee trails. These trails were part of a vast network used by the Cherokee Nation long before European settlers arrived, linking villages, hunting grounds, and sacred sites throughout the southern Appalachian region.
Today downtown Clayton has a charming downtown area with boutiques, local dining, a wine tasting room, and art galleries. Visitors flock to the hiking trails at Black Rock Mountain State Park, and the nearby waterfalls and lakes.
8. Helen, GA
Helen, GA is a charming Bavarian-style mountain town nestled in the North Georgia mountains, offering a unique mix of German culture and Appalachian hospitality. With its cobblestone streets, alpine architecture, and year-round festivities, it feels like stepping into a European village. Helen is also famous for its vibrant Oktoberfest celebration, delicious German food, and quaint local shops.
