The Power of Ownership in Healing
For many people struggling with chronic illness, pain, and long-term health challenges, the journey to feeling better can feel frustrating and out of one’s control. It’s common to hear statements like, “They don’t know what’s wrong with me. They haven’t been able to help me. No one knows what’s wrong with me.“
These words reflect a real and valid struggle, but they also highlight an important mindset—one that places healing in the hands of external sources rather than within oneself.
While medical professionals, treatments, and therapies all play a critical role, there is an aspect of healing that can only be achieved when we recognize the power we have over our own health. I like to call this concept awakening the inner physician. This awareness brings us to an active participant role, rather than a passive or recipient role. When we call upon the inner physician, we can direct every choice—what you eat, how you move, your stress levels, your relationships, sleep patterns, and even the way you think.

Shifting from Passive to Active Healing
Instead of viewing healing as something that happens to you, consider it as something you create through daily habits and awareness. This shift is not about self-blame or guilt. It is about self-reflection and empowerment. When we acknowledge our role, we can make intentional choices that support healing rather than unknowingly contributing to imbalance.
Actionable healing steps begin with the mundane. Your day to day-what you eat, how you think, your relationships and how you move about your day.
Key Elements to Healing
Food as Medicine – Are you nourishing your body with whole, anti-inflammatory foods, or relying on processed, convenience options? Small shifts, like incorporating nutrient-dense meals and eliminating inflammatory triggers, can have profound effects over time.
Managing Stress – Chronic stress is one of the biggest disruptors of healing. Practices like deep breathing, mindfulness, acupuncture, and time in nature can shift the nervous system out of survival mode and into repair mode.
Quality Sleep – Poor sleep disrupts hormones, immune function, and recovery. Establishing a nighttime routine and prioritizing rest is foundational for healing. Turn the TV off, put your phone out of reach and get the room temperature nice and cool.
Emotional & Energetic Healing – Past traumas, negative thought patterns, and unresolved emotions can manifest as physical symptoms. Seeking therapy, journaling, or engaging in nervous system regulatory practices like acupuncture can help integrate the body, mind and spirit.
Ridding the body of Toxins-We live in a world with more chemicals than ever. Learning about different detox methods from lymphatic drainage, activated charcoal or other binders, parasite cleanses, rebounding and sauna can have a profound impact on cleansing your body and making space for active cellular renewal.
The Courage to Take Responsibility
Taking responsibility for your healing is not about denying medical support; it’s about realizing that true healing is a partnership between you and the care you receive. Doctors, Acupuncturists, Chiropractors, Naturopaths, healers, and various practitioners can guide, but only you can implement the daily actions that foster lasting wellness.
If you are struggling with chronic illness or pain, ask yourself: What role have my habits, lifestyle, and mindset played in my current state? What small shifts can I make today to move toward feeling better? Approach these questions with self-compassion rather than judgment, and remember that each positive change—no matter how small—is a step toward transformation.
Healing is a journey that requires both external guidance and internal awareness. By shifting from a passive to an active role, we reclaim our power and cultivate lasting well-being.
Healing is not just about finding the right treatment or practitioner. While this can certainly be a game changer, real healing is about stepping into the role of an active participant in your own well-being. The power to heal is within you. And don’t ever underestimate the body’s ability to self regulate, self correct and, heal.
